It's gardening time

April 13, 2010 - Frank Robinson

It's that time of the year again: Gardening time.

Being a resident of Howland, I am enjoying a program that began last year. It's called the Gardens of Howland. It allows township residents to reserve smallish plots of land owned by the township for garden spots. I have my two plots reserved already.

The township plows the dirt into a fine condition, and all I have to do is plant my stuff and maintain it. Last year, I grew enough tomatoes to can a few dozen quart jars of tomato juice. I also grew some cabbage, watermelon, peppers and squash. It all came out OK.

Howland residents who had the garden plots off North River Road last year get first choice for renewal this year, through Friday. After that, new enrollments are accepted by calling 330-856-6464 or by emailing Administrator Darlene St. George at

It's a really neat project. I encourage my fellow township residents to participate.
