Cleveland restaurant gets Lucky with Food Network exposure

Tonight’s episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” on The Food Network will include a stop at Lucky’s Café, a tiny bakery/coffee shop/restaurant in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood.

My wife and I had brunch there last month when we stayed overnight in Cleveland for a wedding, and it’s definitely worth a trip.

The restaurant had a steady crowd for brunch when we were there, and it probably is more crowded now since people won’t be eating outdoors (at tables set up around the gardens that provided many of the herbs and ingredients for the menu items).

My wife had Bruleed Steel Cut Oatmeal, described on the menu as “Topped with winter fruit compote, served with eggs en croute (eggs baked in cream, spinach and parmesan), served with a side of house-made multi grain toast.” It’s the most decadent version of oatmeal I’ve ever tasted.

I had shredded pork tacos, which were one of the specials. I enjoyed it, especially the fresh salsa that accompanied it, but I think I might have preferred the baked mac & cheese (cheddar, brie, parmesan, and mozzarella cheeses, baked with pasta and cream topped with brioche bread crumbs and served with house-made apple sauce) or one of the other regular menu items. According to the restaurant’s Web site, the mac & cheese is one of the dishes Guy Fieri sampled on his visit.

Another special that was spectacular was a tomato mosaic – a plate arranged with slices of five different kinds of heirloom tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

There’s also baked goods available for carryout, including decadent cupcakes topped with a thick layer of buttercream frosting.

“Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” airs at 10 p.m. tonight, and the episode will be repeated multiple times.
