Easy Street hopes `Bee' spells success

August 31, 2009 - Andy Gray
When I saw the national touring production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” last year in Cleveland, I thought, “This would be the perfect show for Easy Street Productions.”

When I mentioned that awhile back to Easy Street co-founder Todd Hancock, the show already was on his radar. Easy Street just was waiting for the rights to become available.

They got ‘em.

Easy Street will stage the musical, which ran for more than 1,100 performances on Broadway, in November at DeYor Performing Arts Center’s Ford Family Recital Hall.

The musical tells the story of six young people, dealing with raging hormones and other childhood issues, competing in a local spelling bee. The show also has an interactive element as audience members become part of the competition and targets for some improvisational humor.

It’s a fun show, one well-suited to the intimacy of the Ford Family Recital Hall. It will run Nov. 13-15, but the run could expand up to three weekends if ticket demand necessitates it.
