Mathews levy must pass

DEAR EDITOR:

I am a student at Baker Elementary in the Mathews Local School District. I want to explain why it is important that our levy passes on May 2.

In my classroom at Baker this year, when the snow melted during the winter, they had to use garbage bags to catch water that was dripping from the ceiling that would empty into a bucket. During the state testing time we would have to go to the computer room. There are not enough computers for everyone, so some students had to use Chromebooks instead. Other classrooms couldn’t use the internet while we were testing because it would slow down our computers and log us off during our test.

Next year I have to go to the high school. This is because the district had to close the middle school. Seventh and eighth grades have to attend the high school now. Iám not really looking forward to that because of the condition of the school.

At Baker we have had heating issues, and at Currie they have had septic problems so bad that two times all the students at Currie needed to come to Baker. At Currie you still can’t drink the water and have to use bottled water.

I have heard people talk about wanting the district to break up into other schools. This would separate my friends. I would be really upset if I had to go to another school than my friends. I already ride on the bus for over an hour to school. I can’t imagine the bus ride to another school. I feel like our community is separated right now. Some people want the levy to pass and some don’t. I would like to see the community come together and help the district build a new school, but I feel discouraged when I see all of the ‘Vote no for Mathews’ signs. I know the taxes will be higher, but the schools are really bad, and we need your help.

Please help us to get the school we need to succeed.

We are the future of this community.

Thank you for your yes vote.
