Always use headlights

DEAR EDITOR:

Accidents on our local highways can be reduced if we all use our headlights every time we drive.

Many of us have vehicles with automatic day-time running lights, but they are not being used.

Many drivers do not understand that the lights will automatically shut off after a few minutes when you park the car and turn the key to “off.” This delay is so that you can exit the vehicle after dark and see where you are going. Take time to learn and understand these conveniences.

Older vehicles and those without auto and daytime headlights require drivers to make the little effort to turn their headlights on and off. That little effort could save your family or others from injury or even death.

Driving in winter and snowy conditions or in low light at dusk or dawn without your headlights may still allow you to see, but other drivers may not see you. Snow on your vehicle and on the road and surrounding areas creates a noticability situation. Your headlights will help.

Wearing seat belts as a driver or occupant is the law. Buckle up and teach your kids to do it every time you get into a vehicle.

Talk about this subject at your morning coffee, chat room or social gatherings.

Let’s all make a difference. We can do it.
