Reach out during the holidays

DEAR EDITOR:

Christmas is upon us once again. Bells will be ringing, Christmas music will be playing as people rush around from store to store to get gifts for those whom they love. Cash registers will be cha-chinging in profit.  Decorations of the season are put up on homes galore. Cooking for the Christmas feast has started, for some, right after Thanksgiving. Some people seem a little nicer, a little more friendly at Christmas time.

Christmas will be a hard time for some. For some, the loved ones that were with them throughout their lives are no longer here due to a tragic loss or due to natural causes. Tears are shed at Christmas time. It saddens me greatly to know that there are parents somewhere who have bought gifts to put under a Christmas tree for their children while bearing the agonizing pain of not having those children with them. It saddens me to know that there is an empty hole in some people’s hearts because their parents have gone on to Glory. I, too, know the pain of losing a parent. But I, myself, instead of going into the depths of depression, choose to focus on celebrating their lives instead of just memorializing them.

At Christmas time, especially, we have to be more diligent about securing our houses because break-ins are on the rise. I remember there was a time when people at Christmas would go caroling from house to house. I think that if they did that in this day and age, they would get mugged.

There was a time at Christmas, Jesus’ birth was taught to some children as well as the story of Santa Claus. The birth of Jesus was paramount. Some parents still tell the story of Jesus’s birth today, but in my humble opinion, very few.

Christmas is hope, love,  charity, good will toward our fellow man. Let us reach out to those who are in need. If you buy gifts, if you can, buy one for someone who can’t. Do something nice for the elderly or the sick and shut-ins. Give of yourself. Give a little of your time to someone at Christmas.

Spread the love of Jesus at Christmas.
