Transit system is operating properly


I am writing this letter because I think it is important that people are aware of how poor Trumbull Transit has been since being taken over by Elderly Affairs transportation the beginning of this year. I am a dialysis patient who uses transportion three times a week for my treatments.

When I started on dialysis in 2010, I used Trumbull Transit for two weeks and stopped after my wheelchair tipped over in the vehicle. I had just had open-heart surgery and could not risk staying with them. I decided to switch to Office of Elderly Affairs. I was very pleased with their competent and friendly drivers and well-equipped buses. Also, their schedule was consistent and I could always count on them to be on time.

I was nervous when I heard that Trumbull Transit was taking over Office of Elderly Affairs on Jan. 1, 2013. I was told that everything would remain the same, and I would receive the same service. I understood there would be a transition period while they got their schedule organized. In one week alone, I was brought to treatment late and picked up an hour early. Nothing has changed or gotten better.

Trumbull Transit has a one-hour window to pick you up in the morning. I live in North Bloomfield, and it takes approximately 30 minutes to get to my dialysis center on East Market Street. Trumbull Transit on multiple occasions has picked me up from home up to 90 minutes early. This is a huge problem for me because I am diabetic and need to be on a consistent schedule for my meals and medication. Also, once I get to dialysis, I receive treatment for four hours. When I am finished, I am exhausted and just want to go home so I can eat, take my medicine and rest.

However, I am not the only person at my dialysis center with this problem. The waiting room is filled with other unhappy people in the same situation. Just recently, I had a driver pick up another patient two hours before her treatment. A petition was passed around my center and 14 people signed it stating they were dissatisfied with Trumbull Transit.

I spoke to my social worker, and she notified the commissioners regarding this situation back in March. I have called Trumbull Transit multiple times with issues regarding scheduling and I have even had a representative come to my home and nothing has gotten better.

I am under the understanding that Trumbull Transit is funded by our tax money through the senior levy. I am disappointed that the commissioners allowed Trumbull Transit to take over Office of Elderly Affairs without reaching out to any of the people that actually use transportation. I hope that if anyone who uses Trumbull Transit and is unhappy reads this, they call the commissioners and ask them why we deserve this treatment.
