Quick action saves this year’s Trumbull Veterans Day parade

The annual Trumbull County Veterans Day Parade might not have happened last week, had it not been for the quick action of the Warren police and fire departments and, in particular, the decisive fast thinking of city police officers Brian Crites and Ben Harrell.

They all should be commended.

Parade units consisting of high school bands, motorized units, antique cars, fire trucks and, of course, more than a dozen U.S. military veterans, were lined up in Perkins Park ready to step off last Saturday when it was suddenly discovered that a miscommunication had resulted in no one being scheduled to close the streets for the parade.

Momentary consideration was given — due to safety concerns — to canceling the parade. But this is no ordinary parade. This parade is organized each year in downtown Warren to honor our local veterans who, without hesitation, gave of themselves to serve their country honorably.

No, canceling this parade was not an option.

That’s when officers Crites and Harrell stepped up to pull patrol officers off the streets temporarily to block intersections. The Warren Fire Department assisted by using their truck to block other traffic.

In the end, the parade went off as scheduled — albeit a few minutes late — and those veterans who served their country received their due recognition.

And it was all thanks to the special efforts of these fine Warren first responders.
