Orchids and onions

• ORCHID: To the staff, students and administration at LaBrae Local School District for the amazing job they did in accommodating the many needs for the 13th District Congressional debate sponsored by the Tribune Chronicle this week in the LaBrae High School auditorium. Not only was it a beautiful and perfectly sized venue, but everyone at the district went way beyond expectations to ensure the event went off without a hitch.

l ORCHID: Also to Warren Township Police for providing security at this week’s congressional debate, ensuring the candidates and everyone attending the event at LaBrae High School remained safe and worry-free.

• ONION: To three Newton Falls Village Council members who failed to show up for a special meeting in which their possible ouster was to be discussed. Their failure to attend the meeting created a lack of a quorum necessary to take action, including votes on other important issues of the day. Onion to the other two members of village council, as well, for planning to take action to remove all three councilmen at one time, creating a situation where there might never be a quorum. Certainly, this could have been better thought out. There must be a better way to handle business in this town once described as “a sleepy little river town gone fission.”

• ORCHID: To Warren City Councilwoman Helen Rucker, D-at Large, who never gave up her 10-year pursuit for the city to purchase splash pads for Warren children. Finally, the plan is expected to become a reality next summer in Packard Park. The estimated $200,000 price tag is expected to be paid with Community Development Block Grant funds.

• ORCHID: To the hundreds of Valley residents from various religious denominations who united this week to show support and to remember the 11 victims of the Pittsburgh Tree of Life Synagogue shooting a week ago. It’s unity like this that overpowers the hatred displayed in acts of violence like the one last week in Pittsburgh. Nearly 500 people attended the local event.

• ORCHID: To organizers of the “Halloween Art Hop,” a special dark-themed Art Hop last Saturday in Warren, billed as where “horror meets beauty.” Popular events like this bring visitors downtown and can only lead to good things, hopefully triggering real growth for the area and local businesses.
