Orchids and Onions
• ORCHID: To Lakeview High School freshman Derek Sandor of Boy Scout Troop 4050, who is planning to create a six-foot, lit 9/11 memorial marker to be placed by the flagpole near the Cortland administration building and police station. What a beautiful way to remember and honor first responders.
• ONION: To those who dump their trash at Bazetta recycling containers. Because of this, and despite trustees’ attempts to curtail it, the township will no longer offer recycling at the township hall. Now those who were serious about helping the environment will suffer by being forced to travel farther to recycle.
• ORCHID: To Cortland Community Foundation and all the donors who have helped in the planned development of a Cortland Veterans Memorial being erected at Point Park to recognize city residents who served in the U.S. military.
• ONION: To Ohio House Republicans for dragging their feet on hosting a vote to appoint an interim successor for House Speaker Cliff Rosenberger, who resigned in April. The delayed vote on Rosenberger’s replacement is holding up voting on all legislation, including some critical to Trumbull County and the Mahoning Valley.
• ORCHID: To members of the Howland High School senior class who spent time this week picking up trash and beautifying the Golden Triangle industrial area as part of the school’s annual day of service.
