Trump right to keep open Guantanamo

Though former President Barack Obama pledged in 2009 to close the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, he was never able to accomplish it. Why? Because he could not propose an acceptable alternative site where terrorists could be held securely, without threat to the public.

Obama’s option was to send many of those at “Gitmo” to other countries. Some of them took up arms again.

During his State of the Union speech last week, President Donald Trump made it official: He will keep the center open and it will be used as intended, as a prison for some of the most evil people on the planet.

Closing the facility solely to please liberals both here and abroad who worry more about terrorists’ rights than about their victims would have been a terrible mistake. Trump is absolutely correct in recognizing that and keeping the detention center open and, we hope, full.
