Orchids and Onions

• ORCHID: To Bristol resident and Pearl Harbor attack survivor James Werner, 95, who shared his memories of the Dec. 7, 1941, attack during an event Wednesday at Kent State University at Trumbull, and to all service men and women who came under attack 75 years ago this week, while stationed at Pearl Harbor.

• ORCHID: Also to Berlin Center resident Melisa Trickett, who wrote a play that was performed locally this week depicting a Mahoning County family learning the fate of son Melvin Root, who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor. The play was described as impactful and helps remind us of the fateful day in American history.

• ONION: To two men — blood relatives — who arranged to fight in the yard outside another relative’s Lexington Avenue NW, Warren, home. Police responded, and one man required medical treatment for a knife wound. Isn’t the holiday season supposed to be about sharing love among family?

• ORCHID: To the Warren Rotary Club for organizing a donation of nearly 500 winter coats and other cold weather items for the area’s needy.

• ONION: To the caller who made a bomb threat to a Niles retailer this week. What reason does anyone have — other than sheer hatred — for making this already hectic holiday season even more chaotic?
