Orchids and Onions

l ORCHID: To planners and participants in the volleyball fundraiser benefit at Champion Middle School recently to help Skylar Scarnecchia, age 10, who is battling cancer. It’s always heartwarming to see the community come together to help children in need.

l ONION: To Jonathan Mitchell Wike Jr., of Niles, former aide to Ohio Sen. Capri Cafaro. Wike pleaded guilty this week to grand theft and theft from a person in a protected class. The charges stem from theft and bad checks, including at least one drawn on the account to operate Cafaro’s senate office. Employees of elected officials must maintain a higher standard.

l ORCHID: To Dr. Valerie Cubon-Bell, an assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry at Kent State University at Trumbull, who was named one of three Kent State University recipients of the Outstanding Teaching Award. She was described by her students as a “natural-born chemist.”

l ORCHID: To organizers of the 13th annual Kelly Jo Carlson Memorial Swim Meet being held today in Warren. The event honors a longtime Special Olympics volunteer who died at a young age in 2004. Funds raised support the Special Olympics and other special needs programs.
