Do your part on important Election Day

Election officials in Trumbull County have been calling the early voter turnout “sluggish” so far, and we are hopeful that is no reflection of what is to come today.

Across Trumbull County, more than 8,600 voters so far have cast their ballots for today’s primary, along with more than 11,000 in Mahoning County. Unfortunately, Trumbull election officials say that’s a slow start, by comparison to past presidential elections.

One would think the excitement generated by the seemingly endless number of national Republican and Democratic debates in this presidential election year would have had voters heading to the polls in droves.

The last-minute, in-person pitches made locally by presidential candidates Ohio Gov. John Kasich, businessman Donald Trump, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders should be a sign of how important the Mahoning Valley is in today’s primary, and as such, we encourage all registered voters to do their part.

Of course, it’s not just the presidential election that is important. Today, voters in Niles will decide how they want their leaders to address the ongoing budget shortfalls; voters in Bazetta, Farmington and Howland will decide levies that would bring additional money to the townships; and party nominees will be chosen in important races for Congress and state representatives, Trumbull commissioner and Trumbull sheriff, among others.

So as you prepare to head to the polls today, here is a recap of the endorsements issued by the Tribune Chronicle over the past several weeks.
