Incumbent endorsed in 14th District race

The Tribune Chronicle Editorial Board endorses incumbent David Joyce over challenger Matt Lynch in the Republican Primary for U.S. Representative in the 14th District. The district includes the 10 townships in the two northernmost tiers of Trumbull County.

Among his accomplishments, Joyce picked up where his predecessor, Stephen LaTourette, left off in bringing sanitary sewers to Kinsman. Thus, one of the worst environmental and economic problems in Trumbull County has been solved.

In the next term, we expect Joyce to use his close, bipartisan relationship with U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Howland, to strengthen the Youngstown Air Reserve Station, position Trumbull County well for restoring jobs and help the county prosper in the oil and natural gas industry.

Joyce is helping the federal government recognize that its choices for reductions in defense spending are wrong. He points out that the Defense Department could cut 2,000 jobs at the Pentagon and never miss a beat, but that soldiers in places like the local station should not be cut.

Joyce and Ryan are also on the same page when it comes to hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in the oil and natural gas industry. There is potential for the Joyce’s and Ryan’s districts to share in the prosperity that the industry promises. Both congressmen seem to have the same mindset – fracking can be done safely, potential dangers including earthquakes need addressed, and infrastructure needs built to more efficiently bring the products to market.

Joyce has always pushed for spending on infrastructure. As he says, this is an investment on American jobs as road, bridge, sewer and pipeline construction and repair cannot be outsourced.

We agree with Joyce on most national issues. He pushes for less government spending, reducing the nation’s debt, and either repealing, reforming or, at the very least, tweaking the Affordable Care Act.
