New store a good sign for economy

The decision by Menards to open a 245,000-square-foot home improvement store in Bazetta is a vote of confidence for Trumbull County’s economic future.

If all goes as planned, early this year the old Walmart on Elm Road will be razed to make room for the home improvement supply store based in Eau Claire, Wis. Construction could begin in June and the grand opening could be in early 2014.

The project could top $7 million. The store would employ approximately 50 full-time and 100 part-time workers.

Menards is a privately held company billed as the nation’s third-largest home improvement retailer with more than 270 stores in 14 states, mostly the Midwest. This store would be the farthest east in the chain. Menards has been in business for 50 years.

With Lowe’s and Home Depot just two bypass exits away on Route 46, the decision to put the eastern-most Menards in Bazetta means the successful company sees great potential here. It has been several years since Trumbull County has seen a major retailer choose this market. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a trend.
