Donald L. Griffin Sr. 1933-2019

WARREN — Donald Leon Griffin Sr., 85, of Warren, formerly of South Portland, Maine, floated away through the dawn to Christ and his eternal home on Wednesday morning, Feb. 6, 2019, at his home.

He was born June 8, 1933, in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Elizabeth Thompson and Perceval Kilby Griffin.

He had been a Warren resident since 1951.

Don was a graduate of South Portland High School, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a Mason. He retired from Republic Steel after 30 years as a metallurgist.

He was an active member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, volunteering as a deacon, serving on the property committee, helping serve the greater community at the clothes closet, food pantry and monthly meals for the needy.

He loved his family, cars and lobster. He was a thoughtful, gentle and kind man.

Don is survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Wanda Marie Smith Griffin, whom he married April 5, 1958; two daughters, Jodiene Marie Forbes of Houston, Missouri, and Kathryn (Julie Winklepleck) Griffin of Lansing, Mich.; two sons, Donald Leon (Paula) Griffin Jr. of Champion and David Ian Griffin of Warren; 12 grandchildren, Lawton, Ahren, Olivia, Jeff, Greg, Nicole, Gary, Bobbi, Josie, Marshall, Kiera and Gage; and eight great-grandchildren, Roman, Cason, Rebel, Avi, Grace, Gavin, Chloe and Camden.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Beverly Jane Anderson; and three grandchildren, Galien, Elijah and Richard.

The memorial service will be 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Warren, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Pastor Koene will officiate.
