Claude H. Westfall 1930-2018

DURHAM, N.C. — Claude Hiram “Wes” Westfall, 87, loving husband and father of three, passed away Monday, Aug. 27, 2018.

Wes was born Sept. 6, 1930, in Athens, to Claude K. and Frances Thompson Westfall.

After graduating from Ohio University in 1953, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, he attended dental school at Ohio State University, receiving his degree in 1956.

He spent two years in the Air Force as a captain then went on to practice dentistry in Niles for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

Wes married Ida Mae Lees on Aug.14, 1954, in Niles. They raised two sons, Todd and Chris; one daughter, Amy; and many dogs.

Wes was a very caring, loving and devoted husband and father with a great sense of humor, quick wit and huge love of music and dogs. In 2006, he was honored as a 50-year member in the Corydon Palmer Dental Society, Ohio Dental Association and The American Dental Society. He also was a member of the Corydon Palmer Peer Review Committee from 1971 to 1989, at the time he retired. Wes also served as president of the Niles City School District Board of Education.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ida Mae; his sons, Todd (Karen) and Chris; grandchildren, Seth, Ryan (Teresa), Jesse and Dillon Westfall, Alex and Ellie Hagar; niece, Claudia Redd; and his black lab, Gracie.

Wes was preceded in death by his only sister, Billie Jean Redd; and daughter, Amy Westfall (David Hagar).

Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, at Few Chapel, Croasdaile Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Durham, NC 27705. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to the United Ostomy Associations of America, https://www.ostomy.org
