George Herwig 1929-2018

PHOENIX, Arizona — George Herwig, 89, passed away Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, following a period of declining health.

He was born Jan. 31, 1929, in Warren, to George and Constance Herwig. He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School and later served in the U.S. Army during the Korean war.

He worked at HK Porter / Peerless-Winsmith before retiring in the mid-’90s. Upon retiring, he completed several online courses, earning degrees in business and theology.

George had a passion for music and would sing at every chance, including church choirs, barbershop choirs and quartets. He also loved gardening and planting trees.

Prior to moving to Arizona, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Warren, where he served on several boards, helped lead a Boy Scout troop, sang in the choir and coached their softball team. He was also a member of the Clarence Hyde American Legion Post 278.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathy Agler of Champion, Margaret (Bob) Gillespie of Trinity, North Carolina, and Amy (Nils) England of North East, Maryland; four grandchildren, Kelly (Will) Good, Christopher Williams, Matthew Williams and Karrick Gillespie; and his second wife, Marian.

George was predeceased in 1989 by his lovely wife, Lucille, whom he married in 1956.

Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at 1 p.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at the Crown Hill Mausoleum Chapel, 3966 Warren Sharon Road, Vienna.

In lieu of material gifts or flowers, the family suggests joining a choir or planting a tree to perpetuate George’s love of music and nature.
