Nancy E. Suddeth 1942-2018
WARREN — Nancy Elizabeth Suddeth, 75, of 3830 Northwoods Court NE, Warren, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, after a long hard-fought battle with cancer.
She was born April 17, 1942, in Warren, the daughter of Fred and Naomi Smith.
Nancy was a 1960 graduate of Cortland High School. She was a trailblazer in the workforce, becoming the first African American employee at Sears and First Energy, formerly Ohio Edison, in this region.
She retired from First Energy after 35 years of service.
In addition, Nancy was a lifelong and active member of York Avenue Church of God, serving as a treasurer and youth leader. She had a great love for the Church of God Campgrounds in West Middlesex and did not miss a single year.
Nancy was devoted to her family and friends. This love for family inspired Nancy to co-found the annual Smith-Eady Family Reunion that began in 1993. She was also very instrumental in the organizing of several gatherings of the Dowes. In addition, she was a caring daughter and sister, excellent mother and aunt and second mother to several family members.
Nancy loved to travel, especially to spend time with family and friends. Philanthropy was another passion of Nancy’s as she supported a wide range of charities.
Nancy is survived by her two sons, Miko W. (Tina) DeFoor of Atlanta and Todd M. Suddeth of Columbus; brother, Fred S. Smith Jr. of Warren; and granddaughter, Naomi E. Suddeth of Columbus.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Jean Williams; brother, Mortimer LeMon; and parents, Fred Smith Sr. and Naomi N. Smith.
A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2018, at York Avenue Church of God in Warren. Calling hours will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
