Donna Jean Durst 1925-2018

CHAMPION — Madonna “Donna Jean” Irwin Durst, 92, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

Donna Jean was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Cortland, to the late Charles Leroy and Mable Alexander Irwin.

She enjoyed sewing, golfing and was very gifted at quilting, earning several awards.

She was a member of Champion Presbyterian Church in which she served as an elder, deaconess, Sunday school teacher and church treasurer.

Donna Jean also was involved with the S.O.C. Ladies-Aid and proudly served on the Champion Board of Education as secretary and bookkeeper.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Durst, whom she married Jan. 26, 1946. They were married 72 years. She also is survived by her daughter, Darlene (Edward) Vasbinder; her son, Bruce (Paulette) Durst; five grandchildren, Eric (Amy) Vasbinder, Adam (Elizabeth) Vasbinder, April (Nicholas) Goshe, Tiffany Durst-Lambert and Jesse (Amanda) Durst; and nine great-grandchildren, Chloe Lambert, Lillian Goshe, Tait Goshe, Sabrina Goshe, Kami Durst, Luke Durst, Ally Durst, Wyatt Vasbinder and Blake Vasbinder.

Besides her parents, Donna Jean was preceded in death by her son, Alan R. Durst; her brothers, Professor Charles G. Irwin and Dr. Glen Flecher Irwin; and sister, Lucille Simpson.

Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday and 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St. in Cortland. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Stelle as celebrant. Private interment will be in Champion Cemetery.
