John O. Russ 1935-2017

HURON — John O. Russ, 82, of Huron, passed away Monday, Aug. 21, 2017, at Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, after an extended illness.

He was born July 21, 1935, in Warren, and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School. He attended Ohio University and graduated from Youngstown State University.

He has been a resident of the Huron-Sandusky area for the past 20 years, coming from Warren.

He worked for Republic Steel as a superintendent in the Cold Stripe Department. After retiring, he worked for Gulf States Steel Co. in Gadsden, Ala., as vice president until 1996.

He was a U.S. Army veteran and served from 1959 to 1961.

He was a member of SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Sandusky, and belonged to American Iron & Steel Organization. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, the Cleveland sports teams and spending time with his special dog, Otis.

He is survived by his wife, Marcia (Demmer) Russ, to whom he was married for 58 years; two daughters, Bridget (Robert) Vaschak of Sandusky and Brenda (Gary Richards) Russ of Rocky River; two grandchildren, Hallie (Tyler) Brooks of Indianapolis and Megan Vaschak of Sandusky; and two sisters, Carolyn Zoba of Warren and Virginia (David) Brown of Ostrander.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Pearl Jonesco Russ.

The family will receive friends 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, until the time of Mass at 10 a.m. at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 510 Columbus Ave., Sandusky. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. at Oakwood Cemetery, Warren.
