Nick A. Bernard Sr. 1934-2017

NILES — Nick A. Bernard Sr., 82, of Niles, died Thursday, June 15, 2017, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

He was born Sept. 9, 1934, in Niles, the son of Patsy and Connie Pellino Bernard.

Nick was a 1952 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, a 1956 graduate of Wayne State University in Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in education and a graduate of Westminster University with a master’s degree in education and administration.

He was employed for 33 years in the Niles City School District, teaching and later serving as principal at most of the elementary schools, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, Niles Knights of Columbus Council 1681, Niles councilman and councilman-at- large for 13 years, Niles City School Board member for eight years and chairperson for March of Dimes and the American Cancer Society.

He will be sadly missed by his wife, Kathleen McFall Bernard, whom he married Aug. 24, 1957; two sons, Nick A. Bernard Jr. of Niles and Jason Bernard of Parkersburg, W.Va.; two daughters, Patty (Jeff) Smith of Niles and Polly Milijons of Bazetta; five grandchildren, Maggie, Mathew, Jacqueline, Breana and Erica; and four great-grandchildren, Carter, Kara, Nicholas and Vincent.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Frank C. Bernard; and a grandson, Justin Solida.

Friends may call 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Monday at Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles. The Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles, preceded by a 9:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.
