John Peters Jr.

FARMDALE — John “60-40” Peters Jr., 91, passed away Friday, March 31, 2017.

John was born July 16, 1925, in Warren, to John and Pauline Post Peters Sr.

He proudly served his country in the Navy from 1943 to 1953 during both World War II and the Korean War. He was a Petty Officer 1st Class E6 stationed on the Badoeng Strait CVE 116 as part of air group 224.

After he was discharged, John was owner and operator of John Peters Wood Products, retiring in 1989.

He was a past commander of the VFW post 7614 in Johnston and a member of Masonic Lodge 529 in Cortland.

He enjoyed woodworking and having coffee with the guys. He was known for his signature green Dickies pants and shirts and when asked how he was doing, he always responded with his trademark “60-40.”

He is survived by his daughters, Carol (Dale) Kohlmorgan, Cathy (Virgil) Brainard and Linda (Melvin) Yoder; his grandchildren, Brenda, Melissa, Joshua, Megan, Christopher and Johnathan; his great-grandchildren, Kylie, Josie, Caden, Jude, Kara and Elijah; his sisters, Laura Griffin and Mary Humphry; as well as many other relatives.

John was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Zelma Hornbeck, in March of 1989 and his second wife, the former Marlys Phouts, in October of 2012. He also was preceded in death by his brothers, Paul and Joseph Peters.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 8, at Lane Funeral Homes, Cortland location, where Masonic services will be held at 12:45 p.m., with funeral services starting at 1 p.m.
