William J. Thorne

CORTLAND — William J. Thorne, 75, of Cortland, entered into rest on Friday, Feb. 3, 2017, at the Hilton Head Island Medical Center in Hilton Head, S.C., while on vacation.

William was born Dec. 18, 1941, in Youngstown, the son of the late William and Evelyn Jenkins Thorne and had resided in Cortland for over 30 years.

He was a 1959 graduate of Poland High School and earned a bachelor’s degree at Michigan State University. Later, he received his master’s degree from Westminster College. He was a social studies teacher at Champion High School for 30 years, retiring in 1995. In addition to teaching in Champion, William was the head varsity baseball coach for 25 years and also the head cross country coach. Later, he taught career-based intervention at Lakeview High School, where he was also on the football coaching staff. Upon retirement, William volunteered his time at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital.

On July 11, 1970, William was united into marriage with the former Kristine Tollefson; and they had shared 47 years together.

His life will be remembered and celebrated by those he leaves behind, his loving wife, Kristine Thorne of Cortland; son, Eric J. Thorne of Newburyport, Mass.; and grandchildren, Addison and Tyler Thorne.

William was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, 962 North Road NE, Warren, Ohio. Officiating will be the Rev. Carl G. Kish. Friends may call 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, prior to the services.
