Virgil Minniti

GIRARD — Virgil Minniti, 84, of Girard, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017, at his home.

Virgil was born April 2, 1932, in Girard. He was the son of Demetrio and Giovanna Minniti.

Virgil proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, with distinction, during the Korean War.

He was employed for over 50 years, working at a bowling alley as a very young man and then the US Steel McDonald Works, the Ohio Leather Works and finally retiring from Brainard Rivet Co.

He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father and a loving ”Nonno.” He was a ”Hero” in the eyes of his nieces and nephews. He was generous to his friends, sharing with them a wealth of skills and services. He gave his time when they needed and never for pay.

He enjoyed frozen mochas, gardening, TV movies, listening to country western and Italian songs, playing cards and mind-bending metal puzzles.

He raised a variety of farmlike animals for many years. In addition, he raised as many as 500 variety of pigeons at one time earlier in his life.

He is survived by his six children, Demetrio (Georgia Smith) of Girard, Virgil (Debbie) of Liberty, Philip (Annette) of Girard, Giovanna (Ken) Whitfield of Girard, Felicia (Matt) Mesaros of Canfield and Frank (Tamara) of Niles; and 17 grandchildren, Virgil III, Nico, Ashley, Philip Jr., Gino, Deidre, Dante, Gabriella, Malena, Jacob, Adam, Krista, Alan, Sabrina, Andrew, Santino and Gianni.

In addition to his parents, as well as siblings, Anna, Mary, infant Philip, Philip, Carmel, Sam, Angelo, Helen and twin infants Joseph and Michael, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Francesca Minniti, whom he married July 24, 1960, and who died Sept. 15, 2016.

A Mass of Christian burial will be noon Monday, Feb. 27, at St. Rose Church in Girard, where the family will receive relatives and friends 10 a.m. to noon. Virgil will be laid to rest next to his wife in Girard City Cemetery.
