John N. Rose

ORWELL — John N. Rose, 72, died Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, at UH Geauga Medical Center.

He was born April 10, 1944, in Ravenna, the son of Forest Howard Rose and Betty Neill Rose.

John grew up in Garrettsville, where he learned the family flower shop business. As a child, he was a member of the 4-H club and helped care for the family horses. John helped his mother run the flower shop after his father died. They grew many of their own flowers, as they managed an acre greenhouse to support their business. He graduated from Windham High School in 1962, and then attended The Ohio State University main campus for two years, where he received training in agriculture and horticulture.

As a young man, John enjoyed drag racing in his car, “White Lightning.” He also loved to bowl and collect model trains and model cars.

John married Judy A. Saxion Rose on Jan. 15, 1972. He and his wife began farming in Rootstown, then Alliance, and finally Greene, before moving to Orwell. He grew a variety of grains, corn and hay to support the farm where he raised and milked Guernsey and Holstein cattle.

John was a long time resident of Orwell, having relocated his family to the village in 1979, to start his own flower shop. He ran the business for five years but had to close because of the downturn in the economy. John eventually worked at Alphabet KayDee for 11 years, before returning to the flower business in 1999. He retired from the business he loved in 2013.

John dedicated a lot of his time to helping the community of Orwell. He spent many years working on the festival committee in the 1980s and 1990s, served as an adviser for local 4-H clubs for small engines and crafts, was a long time member of the Ruritans and served on the village council for 13-plus years over several terms of office.

John is survived by his wife and two sons, Judy Rose of Orwell, Eric N. Rose of Orwell and Forrest H. Rose of Oberlin; his brother, Charles (Karen) Rose of Utah; and sisters, Lillie Smith of Utah, Mary Phillips of Garrettsville and Judy Boylen of West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, John Robert Rose.

Funeral services officiated by the Rev. Jody Baker will be 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, 2016, at Paine Funeral Home, Inc., 140 E. Main Street, Orwell, OH 44076. Burial will follow at the Orwell Township North Cemetery. Visitation will take place 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016, at the funeral home.
