Carmen J. Camp
SOUTHINGTON — Carmen J. Camp, 88, of Southington, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2016, at Lake Vista Nursing Home in Cortland.
He was born Carmelo J. Campanella on Sept. 12, 1928, in Little Italy, Cleveland, to Pedro and Mary Karey Campanella.
Carmen has spent 86 years in Southington. He and his brother-in-law were instrumental in founding the Little League program in Southington. Carmen spent his life supporting and promoting Southington athletics and the fire department.
On June 30, 1951, he married the former Barbara Ahart and they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage until her passing, Oct. 3, 2008.
Carmen was a member of the Southington United Methodist Church and a veteran of U.S. Army, having served during WWII. He retired from Copperweld Steel after over 33 years of service.
He enjoyed golfing, traveling and playing cards. Carmen was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching the Cleveland Indians, Browns and Cavs.
Memories of Carmen will be carried on by his daughter, Lisa (Rich) Trask of Middlefield; sons, Russell (Jennifer) Camp of Warren, Gary Camp of Butler, Pa. and Douglas (Debbie) Campanella of Lake Hughes, Calif; sisters, Mary Fonner of Youngstown and Josephine Kundel of Howland; six grandsons; two granddaughters; and two great-grandsons.
Besides his parents and wife, Carmen was preceded by his brother, Clement Campanella.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at Southington United Methodist Church, where Pastor Jim George and Pastor John Wolfe will officiate. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 2016, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Southington Reformed Cemetery, Southington.
