Rudolph M. Malys

NORTH BLOOMFIELD – Rudolph “Rudy” Michael Malys , 87, passed away Sunday, Oct. 9, 2016, at his daughter’s home.

He was born Aug. 27, 1929, in Warren, a son of Michael Malys and Bessie Yusko.

Rudy graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army for four years, attaining the rank of sergeant.

He retired from Packard Electric in 1985 after 30 years of service. He also was active in the business community as the founder and owner of several small businesses, including the legendary Roo-Dee’s drive-in in Cortland, the Warren Boat Shop, Whetson Farm Market and Sunnyslope Greenhouses. He thoroughly enjoyed cultivating these businesses and watching them grow.

Rudy was a generous businessman by helping other small business owners in the area. Many of those who worked with Rudy would consider him a “taskmaster” but a generous man, which led to his businesses being successful.

Rudy enjoyed gardening, biking, watersports and traveling, especially to Hawaii, and he loved the ocean and being outdoors. As John F. Kennedy said, “We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea – whether it is to sail or watch it – we are going back from whence we came”

He will be missed immensely by his daughter, Michele Monroe (Donald) of Niles; son, Mark (Tina) of Plainfield, Ill.; daughter, Melissa (Dan) Persing of Niles; and daughter, Malinda (Dennis) Garris of Vienna, Va. He also is survived by 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Gertrude Hutchins of Cleveland; a brother, Robert Malys of Cortland; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

The family suggests material contributions be made to the Hospice of the Valley or the American Cancer Society.

There will be a private family service at All Souls Cemetery
