HUBBARD — Louise “Martha” McLain Gahagan Merritt, 97, formerly of Hubbard, went home to be with the Lord 3:05 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty.
Louise was born Oct. 11, 1919, in Akron, a daughter of the late James and Marvel Bowers McLain.
Louise was a 1937 graduate of Hubbard High School, lettering in baseball and basketball. She went on to receive an associate degree in business from Youngstown College. She helped run her family-owned and -operated business, Gahagan Grocery Store, while also teaching at Sharon Business School. Louise worked for 16 years in the billing and payroll department at Standard Steel Products of Youngstown until her retirement in 1977.
She was a proud member of Masury United Methodist Church and Central Christian Church of Hubbard, teaching Sunday School for 75 years. Louise swam every morning at Hubbard pool and taught swimming lessons at St. John’s in Sharon. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking and playing cards. She was a member of Fortnightly and a Hubbard alumni.
She leaves behind a daughter, Carolyn Gahagan, and a son, James (Debra) Gahagan, both of Hubbard; one grandson, James (Yvonne) Gahagan of Vienna; and a brother, Charles (Marjorie) McLain of Spearfish, S.D.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents and her first husband, George K. Gahagan, whom she married May 2, 1941. After 33 years of marriage, George died June 29, 1974. Louise was also preceded in death by her second husband, John Merritt; and two sisters, Ruby Mae Nehls and Lois Schoenfeldt.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at Central Christian Church of Hubbard, 44 S. Main St., Hubbard, with Pastor Bob Hitchcock celebrating Louise’s life. Care was entrusted to Lane Family Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel.
