NILES — John “Jack” Mears, 84, of Niles, passed away 2:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, at Briarfield Manor in Austintown.
Jack was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Niles, the son of the late Michael and Hazel Garland Mears.
He was a 1951 graduate of St. Mary’s High School. Years later, Mr. Mears attended classes at Youngstown State University.
Jack retired in 2005, after 47 years as a draftsman for the City of Niles.
Mr. Mears was a lifelong member of St. Stephen Church. He enjoyed daily walks at the Niles Wellness Center, woodworking and shooting at the Greenville Rod and Gun Club. Most importan, he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Jack is survived by his wife, Kathleen Leonard Mears, whom he married Sept. 8, 1956. They cherished 60 years of marriage just this year; two sons, Mark Mears of Dayton and Kevin (Amy) Mears of Chillicothe; and two grandchildren, Bridget and Michael Mears.
In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Rook and Verona Durig; and a brother, Robert Mears.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 2016, at Wm Nicholas Funeral Home and Cremation Services LLC, 614 Warren Ave., Niles, OH 44446. A Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, 2016, at St. Stephen’s Church, with the Rev. Thomas G. Ziegler as celebrant. A funeral procession will leave the funeral home at 9:40 a.m. for Mass.
