John L. Strah

MINERAL RIDGE – John Louis Strah, 92, passed away at 1:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept., 28, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

He was born Sept. 15, 1924, in Niles, the son of John and Mary Danyi Strah and lived in Niles most of his life.

John was a 1943 graduate of Youngstown East High School, a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and a former member of the Knights of Columbus 1681 and the Niles Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a longtime well-known musician. John worked for many years at National Gypsum Co. in the maintenance department. He was a welder at the RMI Company, a member of the Youngstown Sheet Metal Union and was employed by several area heating and cooling companies. He was the owner of Strah Printing, Strah Welding, maintained a Western Union Office and offered leather gifts, camera repairs and locksmith services.

John is survived by three daughters, Theresa (Jim) Hopper of Mineral Ridge, Barbara Farrell of Cortland and Frances (John) Jerome of McDonald; son, Michael J. Strah of Niles; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary (Joseph) Harver of Mineral Ridge.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Barbara (Koletich) Strah, whom he married on Sept. 29, 1951 and who died on March 3, 1990; and two children, John Joseph Strah and Mary Frances Strah, who both died on May 9, 1963.

A service of Christian burial will be noon Saturday, Oct. 1, 2016, at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Michael Lavelle officiating. Family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery.
