He was a hometown football hero in Navarre in the late 1940s.

He worked 30 years for General Electric Trumbull Lamp and traveled the country with his wife, Carole, upon his retirement. In 2003 they settled in Las Vegas, where they enjoyed the warm weather, bingo and video poker.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Shreves Bixler; and three sons, David (Carol) of Marietta, Bruce (Lori) of Warren and Scott (Irma) of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Mandy Cunningham, Kristy Bowser, Cate Bixler, Rachel Carpenter, Philip Sorensen and Stacie Bixler; and three great-grandchildren, Zachary, Haley and Elise. Bill also leaves behind a brother, Duke (Cynthia) Bixler of Dover; and a sister, Thelma Eby of Canton.

He was preceded in death by both parents, and siblings Paul Bixler, Garnet Lickes, Clifford Bixler and Dorothy Wilber.

Arrangements were finalized by McDermott Funeral Home & Crematory in Las Vegas, and a private memorial service will be held in Ohio at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Bill Bixler to a charity of the donor’s choice.
