Elmer L. Nyitrai
NILES – Elmer L. Nyitrai, 84, passed away at 6:05 a.m. Thursday, May 22, 2014, at his daughter’s home with his family and caregiver by his side.
He was born June 6, 1929, in Warren, the son of the late Menyhart and Emma Latzo Nyitrai.
On Oct. 2, 1947, Elmer was united in marriage with his wife, Nadine Dayton, and together they spent 44 loving years until her passing on May 9, 1992.
Elmer is survived by his sons, Daniel (Karen) Nyitrai of Cleveland and David (Paulette) Nyitrai of Leavittsburg; daughter, DaRita (Dennis) Updyke of Niles; and one he viewed as a daughter, Lori (Frank) DeGennaro of Beaufort, S.C.; sister, Eleanor Gearhart of Champion; former son-in-law, Brad Taylor of Frankfort, Ky.; 19 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents and wife, Elmer was preceded in death by his daughter, DeAnn Taylor; brother, Frank Nyitrai; and sister, Emma Clark.
Elmer retired as a butcher from A&P after 25 years. He started Elm’s Service and eventually was assisted for many years by his grandson, Justin Nyitrai. He, along with another grandson, Brian ”Scooter” Updyke, were a great help to him in many ways.
A selfless and generous man, Elmer loved cooking for others by preparing food for weddings and graduation parties. He also had a fondness for riding roller coasters and was proud of the fact that he was the first one to take eight of his grandchildren and one great-grandchildren on their first roller coaster ride.
He rode many of the top roller coasters throughout the United States.
Elmer was a member of the Cortland Congregation of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, and one of his greatest loves was sharing the Bible’s hope of a peaceful new world with others.
The family wishes to express deep appreciation for the support and loving assistance given by the local congregations of Jehovah’s Witnesses and by hospice caregivers.
There will be a memorial service 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lakeview High School auditorium, 300 Hillman Drive, Cortland, with Ralph Walls officiating.
A gathering for for family and friends for refreshments and association will be announced after the memorial service.
