Mary E. Reed

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Mary Elizabeth Warner Reed, 94, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at her home in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mary was born March 20, 1920, in Pittsburgh, to Jacob R. and Elizabeth C. Warner.

She was an alumna of Warren G. Harding High School, Warren, Connecticut College for Women, New London, Conn., and Lake Erie College for Women, Painesville.

She married J. Harry Reed Sr. on May 12, 1939. He preceded her in death Jan. 8, 1973.

She is survived by her children, Patricia Ann (James) Knecht, Nancy (Daniel) Reed McAuliffe, James H. (Melodie) Reed Jr., and Mary Constance (Ronald) Sedgley; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

A longtime resident of Warren, Mary was active in parent-teacher organizations, the Women’s Auxiliary of Trumbull Memorial Hospital and, as a two-time cancer survivor, she served as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society.

She was also a parishioner of St. Mary Catholic Church and St. James Catholic Church, and was a member of Trumbull Country Club and the Youngstown Club.

Mary was an avid bridge player and member of two bridge clubs. She and her husband greatly enjoyed the social aspect of bowling and organized a mixed bowling league.

They bowled in the league until his death in 1973. They also enjoyed living near water and owned a summer home for 24 years on Lake Erie at Conneaut, where they spent every summer from the end of the school year until Labor Day.

At their homes in Warren and Conneaut, they were known for entertaining family, friends and business associates.

After her husband’s death in 1973, Mary began spending winters with her daughter, Nancy, and family in Scottsdale. She moved to Scottsdale permanently in 1986.

In Scottsdale, she was a parishioner of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, a board member of the Seville Park Homeowner’s Association and member of the Florence Crittenton Auxiliary.

Services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 7655 E. Main Street, Scottsdale. Visitation with the family will follow the Mass in the church hall.

Interment will be in Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna.

Arrangements are being handled by Messinger Indian School Mortuary in Scottsdale.
