Palmer A. Gentile

NILES – Palmer A. Gentile, 93, of Niles, died at 10:50 p.m. Sunday, March 2, 2014, at The Vista Center at The Ridge.

He was born Aug. 23, 1920, in Niles, the son of Joseph and Rose Petrillo Gentile.

He was a 1938 graduate of Niles McKinley High School and employed as a foreman at Heltzel Steel for 31 years, retiring in 1985.

He was a member Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, San Felippe Neri Lodge and Niles Democratic Club; Niles councilman for more than 10 years; and past member of The Niles Knights of Columbus Council 1681.

He enjoyed golfing, gardening, crossword puzzles and spending time with his grandchildren, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Rosemary Montemurro Gentile, whom he married Nov. 28, 1953; three daughters, Luanne (Mark) Matheny of Blythewood, S.C., Maureen Spackman of Mineral Ridge and Paula Gentile of Niles; four grandchildren, Jillian, Amanda, Alayna and Jenna; and two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Kinley.

He was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Gentile; a brother, Arthur Gentile; and a sister, Lena Burke.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles, where the Mount Carmel Bereavement Ministry will conduct prayers at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Deacon Michael Hanshaw officiating. Palmer will be honored for his military service immediately after the funeral.

Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery.

Arrangements are being held by the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
