Gerald G. Calland

NEWTON FALLS – Gerald G. “Jerry” Calland, 78, of Newton Falls, passed away Tuesday evening, March 25, 2014, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after a long battle with cancer.

He was born Feb. 5, 1936, in Newark, the son of the late Allen Britton and Dorothy J. Crosser Calland.

Mr. Calland has been a lifelong resident of Newton Falls and graduated high school with the class of 1954.

He married Wilma Jean Nichols on Jan. 21, 1957, and they have enjoyed 57 years together.

Jerry was a very active member of the Newton Falls United Methodist Church, where he has served in many different roles. He was a member of Newton Falls Masonic Lodge 462.

He worked at Denman Tire for 41 years in sales and retired in 1997.

Jerry had many interests, among them were oil painting, reading and his favorite pastime, golf. He had played in many golf leagues at River View Golf Course, where he would also help out as a starter.

He will be missed by his wife, Wilma Calland; daughter, Linda Miller; son and daughter-in-law, Greg (April) Calland, all of Newton Falls; a sister and brother-in-law, Carol (Tom) Doty of Columbia, S.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Ron (Pat) Calland of Lynchburg, Va.; six grandchildren, Lindsay, Danielle and Alex Calland, Lee, Jacob and Tyler (Hailee) Miller; and one great-grandchild, Mason.

Mr. Calland was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant son, Richard Calland.

The family ask that contributions take the form of donations to the Newton Falls United Methodist Church, 336 Ridge Road, Newton Falls, OH 44444.

The family will receive friends from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Newton Falls United Methodist Church in Newton Falls, followed by 3 p.m. Masonic services. Then, immediately following the Masonic service, the Rev. Gordon Ferguson will officiate the memorial service.
