Helen M. Kemp 1912-2014
HOWLAND – Helen M. Kemp, 102, passed away on Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 5, 1912, in Upper Sandusky, the daughter of the late Orton and Bertha Bower Arter.
Helen received a two-year associate degree in education from Ohio Northern University and a bachelor of science in education from Youngstown State University.
She was a teacher in the Lakeview School District for 23 years before retiring, having spent 19 of those years as a fourth-grade teacher at Cortland Elementary.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Warren, the Wesly Ann and the Epworth Class. She had volunteered for 15 years for the Trumbull County Chapter of the American Red Cross Bloodmobile.
She enjoyed sports and was an avid sports fan. She liked to knit, play golf and bowl, loved to read and had traveled extensively with her late husband.
Memories of Helen will be carried on by a daughter, Jane (Ed) Sullivan of Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Barbara Benedict of Zionsville, Ind.; a grandson, Kevin (Robin) Sullivan of Temple, Texas; a grandson, Brian (Maria) Sullivan of Highland Park, Ill.; a granddaughter, Amy (Chris) Hanshew of Westfield, Ind.; a grandson, Greg (Erin) Benedict of Zionsville, Ind.; and great-grandchildren Shawna and Keri Sullivan of Temple, Texas, Alec and Natalie Sullivan of Highland Park, Ill., Ryan, Taryn and Tyler Hanshew of Westfield, Ind., and Jackson and Madison Benedict of Zionsville, Ind.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lewis J. Kemp, with whom she shared 58 married years until his passing in 1993; a daughter, Marilyn Sue Kemp; a sister, Ruth Failor; and a brother, Morris Arter.
Services of final committal will be held in Magnolia Cemetery in Magnolia with the Rev. Rick Oaks and Pastor Dan Devadan of First United Methodist Church of Warren officiating.
