Emil Mazanetz 1920-2014

NEWTON FALLS – Emil Mazanetz, 93, of Newton Falls, entered into rest on Friday, Jan. 3, 2014, at Autumn Hills Care Center in Niles, where he was recuperating from a fall.

Emil was born May 18, 1920, in Charleroi, Pa., the son of Joseph and Veronica Mazanetz.

A longtime area resident, Emil was a 1938 graduate of Newton Falls High School.

Emil was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 11, 1942. He served in the European and the South West Pacific Theaters during World War II and was awarded three bronze stars and obtained the rank of sergeant. He received his honorable discharge and returned to civilian life on Dec. 22, 1945.

Upon his return to Newton Falls, he was rehired by Ohio Structural Steel, where he worked as a lay-out man until his retirement.

Emil married Eve M. Prokop on Jan. 21, 1946. The family grew to include their four children, Patricia, Robert, Joseph and John.

He was a parishioner of St. Mary and St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 3335.

Emil enjoyed all sports and was an excellent athlete in his youth. An enjoyable pastime was attending horse racing events.

Memories of Emil will be carried on by his loving family, his daughter, Patricia Miller; his sons and daughters-in-law, Joseph and Brenda Mazanetz and John and Shelley Mazanetz; his daughter-in-law, Carole Mazanetz; his grandchildren, Christopher Miller, Michele Miller, Kimberly Paryss, Heidi (Tim) Wolfgang, Julie (Andy) Takacs, Josh (Aileen) Mazanetz, Mike (Jess) Mazanetz, Aaron Mazanetz and Jonathan Mazanetz; his great-grandchildren, Carley Wolfgang, Corinn Wolfgang, Drew Takacs, Luke Takacs, Robert Mazanetz and Cooper Mazanetz; and his sister, Pauline Bretsik.

Preceding Emil were his wife, Eve, on Jan. 25, 2008; his son, Robert; his brother, Joseph; and his sister, Betty Zeigler.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at the Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls, where a service will be held at 5 p.m. with the Rev. David Merzweiler officiating. Military honors will be held by the Newton Falls Veterans Honor Guard.

Interment will be in Meadow Brook Memorial Park in Champion.

The family requests that material tributes may be made in memory of Emil to the Animal Welfare League.
