John M. Pappas Sr. 1920-2013
WARREN – John M. Pappas Sr., 93, passed on Friday, Nov. 29, 2013, at Washington Square Health Care in Warren, with his family by his side.
He was born on Aug. 22, 1920, the son of Thomas and Rose Kane Pappas, in Warren and has been a lifetime resident.
John was a United States veteran of the Army Air Corps and served during World War II in the Philippines.
He was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church in Cortland, having served as a Deacon.
He has worked at Republic Steel and was the owner of the John’s Sunoco locations in Warren.
John was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 1090, American Legion Post #278 and had served as their past Commander and was a member of the military honor organization for U.S. vets, the Forty and Eight. He also enjoyed woodworking and camping.
John married his wife, Jean Kathryn (Pyne) Pappas on June 15, 1941, and they were happily married for 71 years until her passing on April 29, 2013.
He is survived by his children, Jean “Susie” Phillips of Howland, John Pappas Jr. of Fowler, and Lee (Joan) Pappas of Cortland; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter; sister, Dorothy Reghetti of Warren and nephew, Ernie Pappas of Austintown.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Jean K. (Pyne) Pappas; son, Thomas M. Pappas; daughter, Patricia I. Meeker; parents and brother Ernest Pappas.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive.
Services will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m.Wednesday with calling hours prior starting at 10 a.m. Pastor Gary Crawford will officiate the services.
Burial will follow at Crownhill Burial Park with Military Honors.
