Michael E. Ratliff 1945-2013

CORTLAND – Michael E. Ratliff, 68, passed away peacefully at 11:50 a.m. Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital after a three-year battle with lung cancer.

He was born Aug. 9, 1945, in Texas City, Texas, the son of Dial and Hazel Crump Ratliff.

Michael was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He loved the challenge of building things and retired as a carpenter for the Coffman Construction Company in Arlington, Texas. A true outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing and hunting and watching television, especially cartoons and animated movies. Most of all, he cherished the time spent playing with his grandchildren.

Michael is survived by his wife, Janet (Bowman) Ratliff, whom he married on March 13, 1987; three daughters, Rhonda (Todd) Watkins of Iowa, Shonda (Anthony) Graner of Texas and Tonya (Samuel) Brown of Louisiana; five stepchildren, Dianne (Dr. John) Wassil of Pennsylvania, Dr. Kimberly (Shawn) Lustig of Arizona, Lisa (Charles) Burgess of Ohio, Tracy (Darl) Manks of Ohio and Mitchell (Heather) Green of Florida; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Geraldine Richardson, Peggie Preweitt and Belinda (Larry) Beard; and two brothers, Darrell (Brenda) Ratliff and Bennie (Patricia) Ratliff, all of Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Annette Coffman; two brothers, Ronnie and D.J. Ratliff; and a nephew, Benjie Ratliff.

Calling hours will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home, where the funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday. Pastor James Dittmar of the Warren Baptist Temple will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Trumbull County Honor Guard.
