Maurice R. Skiffey 1941-2013
NILES – Maurice R. “Mo” Skiffey, 72, of Niles, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013, at his residence.
He was born Feb. 16, 1941, in Youngstown, the son of James and Rose Rae Maletsky Skiffey Sr.
Maurice was a 1959 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, where he was an All-County varsity football player, and a 1964 graduate of Ohio University with a B.S. degree in English.
He was owner, operator and broker of Skiffey Realty Associates and Appraising for 20 years, and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish in Niles, Amici Club, Niles Kiwanis, Wolves and Moose. He enjoyed playing racquetball, basketball, golf and pool in several leagues. Maurice also acquired his pilot’s license in 1980 and enjoyed traveling.
He was a United States Air Force Reserve veteran, serving during the Vietnam War.
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Karen Cassidy Skiffey, whom he married Aug. 12, 1972; two sons, Maurice Skiffey Jr. and Joseph Skiffey, both at home; a daughter, Michelle Phillips-Hoso of Lubbock, Texas; three brothers, Dr. James Skiffey Jr. of Niles, Gary Skiffey of Warren and Dr. Robert (Dawn) Skiffey of Wadsworth; a sister, Merrily Rae Jack of Niles; four grandchildren, Dominic Maurice Skiffey, Stephen James Hoso, Meghan Hoso and Christian Palmer; and a great-grandson, Gabriel Hosnie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Brian Phillips; and two sisters, Lana Rae Skiffey and Sandra Fairman.
Friends may call from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Niles, with the Rev. John-Michael Lavelle officiating, preceded by a 10:30 a.m. prayer service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Niles City Cemetery, where Maurice will be honored for his military service by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard.
Arrangements are being handled by the Joseph Rossi and Sons Funeral Home in Niles.
