Donald J. Zimmer 1927-2013

SHOW LOW, Ariz. Donald J. Zimmer, 86, died Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2013 at Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center in Show Low, Ariz.

He was born April 13, 1927 in Elyria, to Loy and Anna Wagner Zimmer.

He joined the Merchant Marines, resigning in 1948. For three years he worked as a journeyman plumber before joining the U.S. Air Force in 1951. He was discharged in 1955 as a staff sergeant at Davis Monthan Air Base in Tucson, Ariz.

He was employed by Shell Oil Co. from 1958 to 1963 when he was hired by Santa Fe International Drilling Co. as an oil field drilling manager. In 1978 he went into business for himself starting up Petroleum Training schools, teaching major oil and drilling company classes in well control, advanced drilling technology and casing and cementing.

Don is survived by his wife Mary Ellen Clower Zimmer, whom he married July 10, 1948; his grandchildren, Donald and Erika Spiess; eight siblings; and many close relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kristin R. Zimmer Spiess.

Don requested there be no memorial service.

He was cremated and his ashes will be spread where he had designated.
