Virginia Hill 1931-2013

COLUMBUS – Virginia “Ginny” Hill, 81, formerly of Warren, passed away peacefully on Aug. 28, 2013, at Kobacker House in Columbus.

She was born Sept. 12, 1931, in Warren, the daughter of Henry H. and Abbie Carter Alden.

Ginny was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School in 1949. In 1952, she graduated from Lake Erie College in Painesville after having earned a bachelor’s degree.

She was an early childhood educator and administrator, having started the Cooperative Preschool Center at the First United Methodist Church in 1956. She developed with Nancy Conway the preschool co-op the Learning Circle, located in the Wean building in 1968.

Finally in 1988, she founded and directed The Hillyer Children’s Center at 609 N. Park Ave. and later opening up an additional site in Jamestown Village until she retired in 2011.

She spent more than 50 years devoting her life to providing and advocating for quality early childhood care and education. She loved spending her summer vacation at the Chautauqua Institute in New York with her children and grandchildren.

Ginny was an active member of the community with memberships in the Friends of the Warren Library, the Tru-Mah-Col Association for the Education of Young Children (AEYC) as well as NAEYC, the 1998 Leadership Mahoning Valley and Christ Episcopal Church.

She was also very active supporting the Harriet Taylor Upton House, Warren Civic Ballet (which became Ballet Western Reserve), and the Trumbull Art Guild, which is now the Trumbull Art Gallery.

Memories of Virginia will be carried on by her daughter, Abbie J. Hill of Madison, Wis.; daughter, Amy (Edwin Desmond) Hill of Kilbourne; daughter, Rebecca A. (David) Grabosky of Columbus; son, Henry “Bart” Hill of La Jolla, Calif.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Carter (Francis) Alden of Charlotte, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Hill, owner of HR Hill Co., whom she married Sept. 5, 1952, and with whom she shared 47 years of marriage until his passing in 1999.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Episcopal Church, 2627 Atlantic N.E. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. with the Rev. J. Jeffery Baker officiating.

Inurnment will follow in the Christ Episcopal Columbarium.
