Ruth I. Smith

WARREN – Ruth Ila Smith, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at Shepherd of the Valley in Niles.

She was born on Feb. 2, 1922, in Mineral Ridge, the daughter of Francis G. and Nettie B. Bixler Clemson.

Ruth attended Mineral Ridge High School. She had worked as a clerk at Woolworth, secretary at Western Reserve Lumber and was a driver for Higley’s flower shop.

Her most rewarding job was as a wife and mother. She loved to crochet and knit things for her family and friends. Her favorite actor was John Wayne, and she loved to listen to Willie Nelson sing.

She loved anything strawberry and had quite a collection. She was also an active member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish.

Memories of Ruth will be carried on by her daughter, Edith “Jane” Skelton of Niles; sons, James R. (Darlene) Smith of Warren and John C. (Sheila) Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepson, Norman C. (Janyne) Smith of Poland; brother, Richard Clemson of Cortland, five granddaughters, four grandsons and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman “Glenn” Smith, with whom she shared more than 40 years of marriage until his passing in 1992; brother, Edward Clemson; and sister, Alice Grafton.

Calling hours will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Queen of the Holy Rosary Parish, 291 Scoville Road, Vienna. The Mass of Christian burial will begin at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Denis Bouchard officiating. Final committal services will follow at the Kerr Riverside Cemetery in Mineral Ridge.
