Ruth York 1927-2013
WARREN – Ruth York, 86, died Monday, June 24, 2013, at her residence.
She was born March 7, 1927, in Warren, a daughter of Joseph M. and Dorothy Mines Rishel, and married Willard K. York on March 27, 1950.
Mrs. York was a member of First Evangelical United Brethren Church and in later years a cherished friend of North Park Avenue Baptist Church. She was very involved in church life, teaching Sunday school and serving in the nursery.
Ruth was also very involved in her children’s lives as they were growing up; she was a room mother and PTA member at Emerson School, and very involved with her son in DeMolay, as well as all of her children’s sports, be it at the ball park, football field, basketball court, golf course or the swimming pool.
She began working after her children were grown, and along with her best friend, Betty Tricker, she managed The Clothes Gallery and then Betti’s Dress Shop. After the stores closed, she worked at Warren Greenhouse, and ended her career, after 20 years, in 2010 at the age of 83 as manager of the gift shop at St. Joseph Health Center.
During Ruth’s spare time, she loved to travel, doing bus trips with all her card club friends, and enjoyed going on cruises. She loved to cook and entertain, and had many dinner parties, graduations, wedding showers and family reunions at her home. She was known for her decorating, especially around the holidays, and many people came to her for advice or just to have her make a bow.
She was so proud of being a St. Joseph Health Center Auxilian since 1974, starting with volunteering in the coffee shop at the old St. Joe’s; she served as board president and then helped with fundraising, serving on the committees for the annual balls they held each year.
Mrs. York also served on the committee that did the Festival of Trees for the YWCA and was on her Warren G. Harding class reunion committee for many years.
Some of her hobbies included flower arranging and playing cards. She enjoyed spending vacations in Myrtle Beach, S.C., or at Geneva-on-the-Lake with her family and friends.
Ruth was a loving mother, a good wife, a cherished grandmother, a neighborhood mom to all the kids and a beloved friend to many. “She has been a beacon, a bright light her entire life, and while the Lord has come and took her from us, there will always be a glimmer left behind by what she stood for and the love she shared with so many.”
Surviving Mrs. York are a daughter, Suzanne York of Warren; three sons, Alan (MaryAnn) York, Keith (Pat) York and Todd York, all of Warren; two grandchildren, Kevin (Margaret) York and Scott York, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; one great-grandson, Owen Lucas York; one sister, Joanne Knowles of Toronto, Canada; several nieces and nephews; and faithful companion, Collie Ella Blue.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Willard K. York on Feb. 17, 1989; a daughter, Janine; sister, Kathryn; and one brother, David.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and again from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Friday at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where her funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Pastor James F. Baer will officiate.
Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
Material contributions are asked to be made in Ruth’s honor to St. Joseph Health Center, Healing Garden, c/o Gail Bellan, 667 Eastland Ave., Warren, OH 44484.
