Martha E. Murphy 1939-2013
WARREN – Martha Elizabeth Murphy (formerly Peck), 74, passed away peacefully Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at her daughter’s residence following a courageous two-year battle with colorectal cancer.
She was born Jan. 23, 1939, in Rome, Ga., the daughter of the late Joseph S. Murphy and Sally F. Bennett Murphy.
Martha had lived in Warren for more than 50 years and also lived in Lake Placid, Fla., for 10 years.
She was a 1957 Champion High School graduate, where she excelled in track, softball and cheerleading. Then she worked as a school bus driver for Champion School District for 20 years before she retired in 1988.
Martha enjoyed camping, sewing, crocheting and going to casinos. She loved the beach and spending time with her kids and grandchildren. She participated in the Warren Relay for Life for the last two years, and this year she was a banner holder.
Memories of Martha will be carried on by her loving family; three daughters, Judith Smith of Warren, Jodi (Greg) Smith of Warren and Jami (Michael) Wilson of Philadelphia; one son, James Peck of Kinsman; one sister, Juanita (Gene) Ziegler of Warren; two brothers, Charles Murphy of Logan, W.Va., and Waymon (Jeanne) Murphy of Leavittsburg; six grandchildren, Joey Smith-Rood, Michael (Jessica) Smith, Brian Smith, Kelsi (Jeshua) Logsdon, Elizabeth Sayers and Kristen Wilson; two great-grandchildren, Dylan and Deven Rood; and one great-granddaughter due in November, Presley Smith.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; one sister-in-law, Norma Murphy; one brother-in-law, William Harris; one grandson, T.J. Sayers; and her in-laws, Ira and Elizabeth Peck.
Cremation has taken place. Following Martha’s wishes, her children will host a celebration of life party at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Champion Christian Church in Champion. At Martha’s request, dress is to be casual colorful attire, and please no black clothing.
The family offers a special “thank you” to Hospice of the Valley (Jennifer), the area agency on aging (Pam), Seidman Cancer Center, and friends and family for all their thoughts and prayers.
