Emerson R. Walters 1920-2013

NEWTON FALLS – Emerson Russell “Russ” Walters, 92, of Newton Falls, passed away peacefully Friday, June 14, 2013, at his home surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born Nov. 14, 1920, in New Castle, Pa., the son of the late Thomas Adam Walters and Vera Heleana Walker Walters.

Russ married Janet Winland Gardner in 2004 and she survives. He has lived in Newton Falls since 2005, formerly of New Castle.

He worked as a prison guard at HT Penal Institution for the state of Pennsylvania for more than 20 years, retiring in 1990.

He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, where he earned the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with Oak Leaf Cluster for valor and two Purple Hearts for wounds received when captured in France on Aug. 29, 1944; he ended up being a POW in Germany Stalag 7A for almost a year. He also received the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, combat infantry badge, WWII Victory Medal, POW Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and a number of medals while serving in the 1st Infantry Division from 1942 to 1945. He also re-enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1950.

Russell loved hunting, fishing, boating, spending time at his cottage in the mountains of Tionesta, Pa., and family time. He was a member of the General Assembly Church of God in Newton Falls for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Tom, Cecil and Joseph Walters; one sister, Shirley Walters; and one daughter, Tina Gracey.

Memories of Russ will be carried on by his family, two daughters, Donna (Bill) Swope of Newton Falls and Bobbette (Dave) Arbogast of Newton Falls; one sister, Dorothy Costeal of Phoenix; six grandchildren, Carrie (Josh) Calladine, MaryBeth (Jim) Walton, Tamara, Shane Swope, and Shelby and Joey Gossick; seven great-grandchildren, Emma, Hannah, Abbie, Isaac and Silas Calladine, and Brooke and Hunter Walton; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at the General Assembly Church of God in Newton Falls with Pastor Mitch Meadors officiating the service. Russ will be laid to rest in Newton Falls Cemetery.
