Betty A. Gowdy 1926-2013
FOWLER – Betty Anita Gowdy, 86, died at 1:50 a.m. Monday, June 10, 2013, at Gillette Nursing Home in Warren after an extended illness.
She was born Sept. 14, 1926, in Warren, the daughter of the late William B. and Esther A. Toot Burgermyer.
Betty graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1944 and then from Trumbull Memorial School of Nursing in 1947 as a registered nurse.
Mrs. Gowdy worked at Trumbull Memorial Hospital as a labor and delivery nurse for many years. She did private-duty nursing from 1960 to 1965. Her later jobs included being an RN consultant for Gillette Nursing Home. She obtained her RN administrator license and worked as an RN administrator at various nursing homes – Windsor House III in Fowler, Windsor House IV in Vernon, Faber Nursing Home in Fowler and retiring from Imperial Nursing Home in Warren in 1991.
During her life, she was very active not only in nursing but as a mom and grandma. She was a Cub Scout den mother; she loved and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and picnics back at the family lake. She enjoyed years of snowmobiling with her husband and friends.
Betty was a beautiful, loving lady who always put others before herself. She was always caring for someone or something.
Some of her other hobbies included gardening, farming, sewing, canning and bird watching. She also was an avid Cleveland Browns fan.
Her memberships included being a member of the Fowler United Methodist Church, the Eastern Star Cortland Chapter Opal 181 and the Warren Women Business Association.
Survivors include her children, Cheryl (James) Ward of Lyndhurst, Barbara (Tom) Carr, Nanette (David) Leidich and Earl (Elaine) Gowdy, all of Fowler; her grandchildren, Janet Sekelsky, Michele (Michael) Cohn, Candace (Jeff) Renner, Jennifer Moskal, John Leidich, Timothy (Joanie) Leidich, Carrie (Lynn) Rutledge, George Mateyko, Rachelle (Tony) Palac and Jared (Amanda) Gowdy; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Mae Wishart of Warren and Mary Ellen Swanson of Liberty; and many nieces and nephews.
Other than her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Wasson Gowdy, on March 2, 2002, and they were united in marriage on Oct. 25, 1947; her son, David Gowdy; and one brother, William Burgermyer.
Family and friends may visit from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday with the Rev. Daniel Wilson celebrating Betty’s life.
