Tom Capers 1950-2013
WARREN – Tom “Tapey” Capers, 62, entered into eternal rest Friday, April 26, 2013, at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
Tom was born Sept. 15, 1950, in Shelby, Miss., the son of Homer and Flossie Billings Capers.
In search of economic opportunity, the family moved to Warren in 1952, where Tom was raised and spent most of his adult life. As a youth Tom had a passion for sports, especially baseball, where he gained the nickname “Tapey” due to his skill in repairing broken wooden bats. Tape graduated from Warren Western Reserve High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Antioch College in Yellow Springs.
Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army, where he earned the designation of M-16 sharpshooter and was trained and held responsibilities in race relations leadership. Professionally, Tapey has held a number of positions in community organizing, youth advocacy and business administration with the Urban League, Central State University and the Rebecca Williams Community Center. He spent the last 20 years as a self-employed contractor.
Tom had a love for listening to talk radio and reading anything, especially historical non-fiction, John Grisham novels, National Geographic and an array of newspapers and news magazines. Other hobbies have included tennis, billiards and handball. Most recently he enjoyed going to the library, being outdoors and he was always excited to help someone in need or by providing needed information or insight. Tape loved spending time with his family and friends and bringing life to any of these gatherings. However, for the last several years it was spending time with his beloved granddaughters that returned joy and life to him.
Tapey is survived by his father, Homer (Naomi) Capers of New Bedford, Pa.; his mother, Flossie Capers of Warren; his son, Dante (Fareedah, M.D.) Capers, and their children, Micaiah and Eden Gabrielle of Warren; one sister, Linda Capers Fraction of Grand Prairie, Texas; one brother, William Capers of Warren; and a host of family and friends to cherish his joyous memory.
Tom was preceded in death by a brother, Tony Capers Sr.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Monument of Faith Church of God in Christ, 2165 Highland Ave., in Warren. Calling hours will be held prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m.
Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, 962 North Road N.E., Warren, OH 44483, 330-394-6200.
